Course: Traditional Medicine without Borders: Curanderismo in the Southwest and Mexico
University of New Mexico, 2018
In its 18th year, this popular class brings healers from New Mexico and Mexico to provide information on the history, traditions, rituals, herbs, and remedies of Curanderismo, a folk healing tradition of the Southwestern United States, Latin America, and Mexico, amongst other countries. The course takes an approach in exploring how our ancestors used traditional healing methods, how they have shaped our cultural diversity of yesterday and today, and what the future of this medicine might be.
The course features teachings for a number of rituals, which include: intestinal blockage (empacho), spiritual cleansings (limpias), laugh therapy (risa terapia), shawl alignments (manteadas) and preparation of medicinal teas (tes medicinales).

It is well known that Vata acts as a subtle energy that controls cellular function. The molecule Nitric Oxide (NO) is an intra/extracellular signaling gas, a powerful vasodilator with a very short half-life, actively produced by many cells. It is been investigated in numerous pathological processes, from neurocognitive disorders, to pain and stress, to DNA/RNA dysregulation. We will demonstrate how NO is involved in normal respiratory processes as well as in pranayama, exploring correlations with other body systems (other dhatus and srotas).

The concept that cancer arises from a single cell was recognized by ancient vaidyas. Integrating Ayurvedic knowledge with modern medical technology results in a deep awareness of the complex interplay of genetic, biochemical, physiological, psychological, and environmental contributors.

In Ayurveda, the human body is a biological mélange of the five elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Prana, the life force, manifests as different Vata organisations in the body and represents the combination of Ether and Air. We are going to analyse the specific structural locations of these five subtypes of Vata at a physiological, biochemical and anatomical level and discuss the practical and therapeutic values in addressing imbalances of Vata dosha at different levels of individuals and their practices.
